Napoli vs Arsenal Review
Martin Ødegaard’s goal made the difference between last season’s UEFA Champions League finalists Arsenal and a resilient Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, with this 1-0 victory marking the Gunners’ fourth clean sheet in their last five head-to-head matches. In the first half, Arsenal had a slight edge but never truly dominated, with early chances being speculative. Bukayo Saka’s overhead kick was impressive but ultimately easy for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret to handle, while on the other side, both Kevin De Bruyne and Matteo Politano fired long-range shots directly at Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya.
The visitors had the only real chance in the first half when Mikel Merino connected with Eberechi Eze’s clever flick, but the Spaniard’s weak header from six yards was pushed over the bar by Meret. As the half went on, the home team’s solid defensive setup kept Mikel Arteta’s side at bay. The Premier League champions nearly got lucky when Piero Hincapié’s poorly executed cross nearly turned into a goal, but Meret quickly moved to save the day for Napoli once again. After being the first half’s standout player, Meret had to leave at halftime due to injury, and his replacement, Vanja Milinković-Savić, initially had an easier time guarding the Napoli goal.
Despite an early second-half scare when Hincapié fired over from six yards, Napoli effectively contained their opponents, even though the visitors held plenty of possession. As the clock approached the 75th minute, Arsenal captain Ødegaard secured the win for his team. Following clever teamwork inside Napoli’s penalty area, the Norwegian midfielder spotted a chance and fired a shot into the far corner.
This was his fourth goal in five matches, helping the Gunners keep their perfect start to the season. The home team struggled to create chances in the second half and couldn’t stage a comeback, which may put new manager Max Allegri under early pressure after suffering a third straight loss.
