Aston Villa vs Manchester City Review
Nicolas Jackson scored twice as Aston Villa extended their unbeaten streak to seven games in all competitions with a 2-1 win over Manchester City, ending City’s perfect winning record in the Premier League on matchday eight. City have been dominant in the Premier League this season, but they were decisively stopped early in this match. A sloppy touch from Marc Guehi was ruthlessly punished when Jackson advanced into the box, outmaneuvered Elliot Anderson inside the area, and fired a shot into the top corner.

Manchester City responded quickly, nearly equalizing through Iliman Ndiaye, who cut in from the right and curled a left-footed shot toward the far post, forcing a spectacular save from Zion Suzuki. Midway through the first half, Suzuki was called into action again to block a low shot to his left from Rayan Cherki, who had been set up in the box by Jeremy Doku. Despite falling behind, Enzo Maresca’s team remained determined, and in a near-repeat of an earlier attempt, Ndiaye cut in from the right and curled another left-footed shot toward the far post, but this time it hit the post and bounced away.

Within 10 minutes after the break, City proved this by converting a well-executed free-kick to Ndiaye, who delivered a perfect cross for Erling Haaland to head in an equalizer at the far post. City almost completed the comeback when Josko Gvardiol’s powerful shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Suzuki, a crucial save since Villa quickly countered and took the lead through Jackson, whose low shot slipped under Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Suzuki was proving to be almost unbeatable in the Villa goal, responding swiftly to stop Gvardiol from tapping in a loose ball inside the box. In the closing moments, Villa were firmly on the defensive, but Unai Emery’s team held their ground with determination. They withstood a late threat when Haaland’s header was cleared off the line by Ian Maatsen, ultimately securing their first Premier League victory of the season at Villa Park and preventing City from becoming only the eighth English top-tier team to win their first eight matches of a season.
