Como vs Manchester United Review
Nico Paz put on a masterful display as Como secured an impressive 4-1 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, extending the Red Devils’ winless streak across all competitions to seven games (three draws, four losses). Facing English opposition in a competitive match for the first time, Como couldn’t have asked for a better start at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. For the second consecutive game in this tournament, United fell behind within two minutes, as Paz received a pass from Lucas Da Cunha and expertly curled a beautiful shot into the far corner from just inside the penalty area.
Aiming to become the first Italian side since Lazio in 1999/2000 to win their first two Champions League home matches, Como stayed aggressive, with Martin Baturina’s excellent chance being thwarted by Harry Maguire’s outstanding last-ditch tackle. United kept working hard as the first half went on, with Anastasios Douvikas having a low shot saved by Senne Lammens at the near post, and then the Greek striker wasted another good opportunity by shooting over the bar just minutes later. The visitors did manage to create some pressure before halftime, but Matheus Cunha’s long-range attempt sailed harmlessly over the crossbar, leaving Como with a well-deserved lead at the break.
Similar to the first half, Cesc Fabregas’ team started the second half strongly and quickly extended their lead in the 49th minute. Paz provided the assist this time, delivering a smart pass to Douvikas, who positioned himself well and finished confidently into the corner past Lammens. Eight minutes later, a third goal came as the influential Paz scored his second of the night, taking advantage of an error by substitute Carlos Baleba to break free and calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.
United focused on minimizing damage in the final half-hour, with Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo posing threats from distance. However, Como further extended their lead in the 76th minute when Kaiki delivered a perfect cross that Jacobo Ramon, unmarked in the six-yard box, headed in.
Michael Carrick’s team managed to salvage some pride in stoppage time with a well-executed finish by Joshua Zirkzee, but it did little to overshadow Como’s triumph. The Italian club secured their second win in three matches to begin their first Champions League campaign, placing them three points ahead of United.
