Chelsea vs Brighton Review
Xabi Alonso’s first home Premier League match as Chelsea manager concluded with an exciting 4-3 win over Brighton. Chelsea’s new signing Emiliano Martínez, who missed his former team Aston Villa’s recent 4-0 loss to Brighton, made his Premier League starting debut against the same opponents. Just four minutes into the game, Martínez celebrated as Chelsea took the lead when Mats Wieffer blocked João Pedro’s header but got tangled up with Bart Verbruggen, allowing Roméo Lavia to score.
Morgan Rogers assisted Pedro Neto, who cut into the box and slid the ball past Verbruggen 10 minutes later. Brighton were giving away chances and were lucky not to fall further behind when Pedro somehow missed a side-footed shot after excellent wing play from Neto. Apart from a fairly straightforward catch from Malick Yalcouyé’s volley while stretching, Martínez had been largely unchallenged by the time Chelsea scored their third goal at the 32-minute mark. This time, Jorrel Hato led the attack, charging forward before setting up Joao Pedro for his second goal of the season.
However, Martínez soon had to retrieve the ball from the net after Yalcouyé smashed a volley off the post, extending Chelsea’s Premier League streak to 18 games without a clean sheet. That goal gave the visitors hope, and they should have narrowed the deficit further after halftime when Diego Gómez narrowly missed with a powerful header from a set-piece. At the other end, Cole Palmer failed to convert a whipped cross from close range, which proved costly just after the hour mark. Gómez fired a powerful shot that Martínez saved smartly, but he was helpless when the resulting corner led to a Pascal Groß cross that was accidentally deflected in by Pedro.
However, a triple substitution by Alonso helped regain control of the match, and Palmer skillfully curled a delicate shot beyond Verbruggen’s reach to restore their two-goal lead. Groß then cleverly headed a goal in stoppage time, but it was too late to change the outcome. This victory marks Chelsea’s second home win to start a Premier League season in the past eight years (with 4 draws and 2 losses), setting a strong tone for the rest of the campaign, having scored a league-high seven goals while securing maximum points so far. Meanwhile, for Brighton, it’s a return to reality after their strong start last week.
