Liverpool vs Manchester City Review
Manchester City put in a flawless, resilient performance, surprising Liverpool with a 3-0 win at Anfield as Enzo Maresca became just the fourth manager to win his first six Premier League matches in charge. This was City’s first game since being found guilty of violating most of the Premier League’s financial regulations, and Liverpool fans made their displeasure clear about the alleged misconduct of their rivals from down the East Lancs Road.

The Kop displayed a banner stating “a generation of supporters cheated,” creating a distinctly hostile atmosphere. Possibly motivated by this sense of injustice, Andoni Iraola’s team was eager to take control, but opportunities were scarce for both sides during the first 30 minutes. Alexis Mac Allister attempted to break the deadlock with a spectacular overhead kick, while Gianluigi Donnarumma comfortably saved a long-range shot from Victor Munoz.

City started slowly in a match that lacked a true rhythm, with Enzo Fernandez’s long-range shot easily saved by Alisson. Their attacking struggles were highlighted when Rayan Cherki missed the target after being set up on the right side, in a first half that didn’t live up to the pre-match expectations. The Reds came out of the break with strong intensity, creating three chances within the first five minutes. Donnarumma was forced to make two saves from Lewis Koumas and Ryan Gravenberch, and Mac Allister narrowly missed with a shot just past the post.

On the other side, Erling Haaland had very few opportunities but wasted a prime chance to put the visitors ahead by shooting wide after a through ball from Antoine Semenyo. The match was progressing well, but Liverpool suffered a major setback when the impressive Gravenberch received a harsh second yellow card after a clash with Jeremy Doku. This triggered a further decline in Liverpool’s performance, as Doku’s deflected cross reached Haaland, who expertly finished with a first-time shot past Alisson. Doku then extended City’s lead by cutting in from the left and delivering a brilliant right-footed strike into the top corner, marking a difficult six-minute period for Liverpool following the red card.

In the 78th minute, Cherki added a stunning third goal, arguably the best of the match, calmly scoring past Alisson after excellent teamwork involving Elliot Anderson and Joško Gvardiol. This completed an outstanding display for Man City during a dominant phase, showcasing the exceptional talent at their disposal. Meanwhile, this result handed Iraola his first defeat as Liverpool’s manager, marking only the third time this century that the Reds have failed to win any of their first three home league games of the season.
