Hull City celebrated their first Premier League game since 2017 with a 2-0 win over Manchester United, surprising many since the Tigers hadn’t beaten the Red Devils in league play since 1974. Given the contrasting goals of the two teams this season, most expected Manchester United to easily defeat their opponents. However, that was far from the case, as Hull matched their opponents’ intensity from the start. After Konstantinos Tzolakis saved attempts from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, Oli McBurnie’s powerful header was stopped by Senne Lammens.

Ryan Giles then had a shot pushed over the bar, and McBurnie was denied again from the following corner when Lammens deflected the ball onto the post. This allowed Semi Ajayi, perfectly positioned, to score the Tigers’ ideal opening goal, sparking jubilant celebrations. As the visitors pushed for an equalizer, Patrick Dorgu had two good chances, set up by Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, but missed the goal both times. Mbeumo then attempted an acrobatic shot that debutant Nobel Mendy deflected behind, but Mendy soon made an impact at the other end by expertly directing Regan Slater’s precise free-kick past Lammens.

John Egan blocked a Fernandes shot, ensuring Hull went into halftime with their well-earned two-goal advantage. Michael Carrick reacted by substituting Marcus Rashford for Dorgu, but his team continued to struggle against Hull’s solid defense, with Ayden Heaven’s header going wide. Hull remained confident going forward, highlighted by McBurnie’s skillful run and Mohamed Belloumi’s long-range shot that just cleared the crossbar. Despite injuries forcing Mendy and Lewie Coyle off within seven minutes of each other, Hull stayed strong, and Cody Drameh nearly scored after coming on for Coyle.

Tzolakis had little involvement during most of the first half but performed well by tipping Mbeumo’s shot wide when needed. As the game neared its end, Maguire took a speculative shot directly at him, while Sergej Jakirović’s team made a statement in the Premier League on the day he became the first Bosnian to manage in the league. Meanwhile, the result and the team’s performance will raise concerns for Carrick, as United lost their Premier League opener in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1973.
