Galatasaray vs Barcelona Review
Barcelona secured a 4-1 comeback victory against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League group stage, marking their 10th consecutive win in all competitions. Galatasaray’s famously passionate supporters created a loud and intimidating atmosphere from the outset, but Barcelona quickly found their rhythm. After six minutes, Dani Olmo was denied in a one-on-one situation by goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. Ten minutes later, Cakir made another crucial save to stop Anthony Gordon, who was making his first Champions League start for Barcelona.
Olmo then narrowly missed with a diving header, and Joao Cancelo had a powerful shot saved by Cakir as well. Barcelona controlled the game, so it was quite unexpected when Aleksey Batrakov gave Galatasaray the lead in the 28th minute with their first shot of the match. The midfielder sprinted onto Rafael Leao’s cutback and scored his first Champions League goal, aided by a deflection off Cancelo, which also extended Barcelona’s streak without a clean sheet in the competition to 17 games. Six minutes later, Baris Alper Yilmaz appeared to have doubled the lead by heading in a corner, but a VAR review ruled him offside.
This shift allowed the visitors to regain momentum, and they equalized two minutes before halftime when Cancelo curled the ball into the far corner, marking his first Champions League goal since March 2024. Shortly after the break, Gordon narrowly missed a volley from Yamal’s excellent cross, but four minutes later, Fermin Lopez successfully headed in another superb cross from the young Spanish player, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Yamal continued to impress, setting up Gordon to score his first Champions League goal for Barcelona.
Both managers reacted by making a series of substitutions, and just seven minutes after coming on, Karim Adeyemi scored his second goal in as many Champions League matches to put the visitors ahead 4-1. Hansi Flick’s team maintained their flawless start to the season and sent a strong signal to their European rivals ahead of next Tuesday’s crucial group stage match against the defending champions, PSG. Meanwhile, Galatasaray have now lost eight of their last 14 Champions League games and remain without points in this season’s competition, with an upcoming trip to Lille scheduled for October 21.
