Liverpool ended their poor run of five consecutive domestic defeats and secured their first Premier League victory since September, thanks to goals scored in each half, leading to a 2-0 win at home against Aston Villa. For the second week in a row, Liverpool played a Saturday night match under the floodlights, but this time it was at Anfield, where they last won in September. Their challenge was tough, as Aston Villa came into the game unbeaten in six league matches (four wins, two draws), including an impressive victory over Manchester City the previous week.

The home fans were nearly silenced within five minutes when Morgan Rogers initiated and nearly completed a brilliant team move, hitting a shot off the post after connecting with Ollie Watkins. Both teams posed attacking threats, creating numerous chances. Dominik Szoboszlai fired a powerful shot narrowly wide from distance, while Andrew Robertson’s attempt was deflected into the hands of Emiliano Martínez. On the other end, Villa forced goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili into action twice. Matty Cash’s shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected off Virgil van Dijk and had to be pushed onto the crossbar by the Georgian goalkeeper, before Rogers was stopped by the Reds’ substitute keeper.

Liverpool increased the pressure in the closing moments of the first half and believed they had scored the opening goal in the 43rd minute, but Hugo Ekitike’s powerful header was ruled out for offside. However, the Anfield crowd erupted again in stoppage time when a high press forced Martínez to lose possession to Mohamed Salah, who confidently scored with his weaker foot, becoming only the third Liverpool player to reach 250 goals for the club.

Unai Emery’s team looked threatening early in the second half, with Evann Guessand posing the biggest threat. Nevertheless, Liverpool held firm under pressure and managed to extend their lead just before the hour mark. Once again, a high press caused a turnover, enabling Alexis Mac Allister to find Ryan Gravenberch, whose deflected shot went past Martínez, much to the relief of Slot and the home supporters.

Villa pushed everyone forward in a bid to change the course of the game, but Ross Barkley missed a great chance after Jadon Sancho set him up inside the box, with Barkley sending his shot high over the bar from close range. Liverpool resisted any possible comeback and secured the win, preventing them from losing five league games in a row for the first time since September 1953. Meanwhile, Villa suffered their first Premier League defeat since August.
