Roma vs Atalanta Review
Roma scored two quick late goals to overturn a 2-1 win against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico, reclaiming the top spot in Serie A and ending a nine-game winless streak in head-to-head matches. Roma aimed for a third straight 4-0 win and a seventh consecutive league victory, showing early momentum in the first 15 minutes. Rodrigo Mora’s cross from the left found an unmarked Gianluca Mancini, who headed firmly, but Marco Carnesecchi managed to save it.
Shortly after, the home team tried a similar approach with Wesley França crossing and Bryan Cristante heading, but Carnesecchi again made a crucial save aimed at the bottom corner. Following the corner, Evan Ndicka scored, but the goal was quickly disallowed for offside. The Giallorossi maintained their control of the game, but Atalanta managed to restrict them to just two close attempts from Mora before the 30-minute mark. When Gianluca Scamacca finally took a shot, it was straight at Mile Svilar. Roma then responded with a header from Paulo Dybala, which Carnesecchi easily saved.
The Atalanta goalkeeper kept his team in the match five minutes before halftime when Wesley combined with Donyell Malen on the left side. Malen cut inside and attempted a low shot, but Carnesecchi blocked it. However, all of Roma’s dominance counted for nothing just 90 seconds into the second half, as the visitors took the lead. Charles De Ketelaere skillfully got past his defender on the left, and although his cutback didn’t reach a teammate, the ball bounced to Éderson, who struck it powerfully past Svilar. Roma nearly responded quickly from a corner, but Manu Koné was also denied by Carnesecchi.
Roma’s substitutes injected new energy and speed into the home team, who kept pressing forward. Matías Soulé’s volley was saved, and Santiago Castro managed to beat the goalkeeper but was thwarted by the post. The last 20 minutes started with Soulé missing a headed opportunity, saved again by Carnesecchi, as Roma appeared to be running out of options. However, two minutes before the end, Castro hit the post once more with a header, and Carnesecchi made a double save from Dybala and Wesley. Atalanta’s defense finally gave way in the 90th minute when Mario Hermoso connected with Soulé’s corner, heading the ball over the goalkeeper.
Roma then pushed forward desperately for a winning goal, which came in the third minute of stoppage time when Dybala passed the ball to Soulé, who scored from the right side of the box, catching Carnesecchi off guard at the near post. This secured Gian Piero Gasperini his first victory against his former club, who suffered a loss in their first away game of the season since 2017.
