Manchester United vs Manchester City Review
Manchester City, reduced to ten men after a first-half red card, managed to secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, preventing Red Devils manager Michael Carrick from becoming the first United boss since 1913 to win his first two league head-to-head matches against City. The 199th competitive Manchester Derby was anticipated to be thrilling, but the first 20 minutes were relatively subdued compared to expectations.
However, the tone shifted midway through the first half when Bruno Fernandes and Phil Foden clashed. Fernandes initially seemed to kick Foden while he was on the ground, but in a situation reminiscent of United legend David Beckham’s incident at the 1998 World Cup, it was Foden who was sent off after retaliating with a petulant two-footed kick to Fernandes’ stomach.
Foden became the first City player to be sent off in a Manchester derby since 2006. Although United never fully capitalized on their numerical advantage immediately, they came close to scoring just before halftime when Marcus Rashford’s 25-yard free-kick hit the post with Gianluigi Donnarumma beaten. The woodwork rattled again five minutes into the second half, this time from Kobbie Mainoo’s 25-yard shot, which also struck the post with Donnarumma unable to stop it.
Despite the pressure United was putting on City’s goal, it was the 10-man City side who took the lead. The goal was surrounded by controversy: initially ruled offside, Erling Haaland was allowed to celebrate again after it was confirmed he was onside when he finished Joško Gvardiol’s cross, despite Enzo Fernández’s failed attempt to touch the ball from an offside position.
Enzo Fernandez was in the spotlight and nearly doubled their lead shortly after, with his curling shot being deflected onto the post by Senne Lammens. Apart from a Bryan Mbeumo header and a Fernandes long-range attempt, United seldom posed a threat to Donnarumma’s goal after going behind. City managed to maintain their lead, extending their unbeaten away streak to eight games and reclaiming a share of the top spot in the Premier League.
