Liverpool vs Fulham Review
Liverpool were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at home by Fulham, who earned their first Premier League point of the season and extended Liverpool’s winless streak at Anfield to four league games. Under Andoni Iraola, Fulham are starting to gain momentum, but Liverpool quickly took control of the match, nearly scoring within the first 10 minutes when Ryan Gravenberch set up the in-form Alexander Isak, who narrowly missed with a left-footed shot.
Despite Liverpool’s early pressure, Fulham had the best chance to score when they were given the ball just 12 yards from goal. Even with goalkeeper Alisson off his line, Gonzalo García failed to score as Jérémy Jacquet made a crucial clearance on the goal line. The Reds remained unfazed by that momentary lapse and quickly regained their composure, creating another strong opportunity to take the lead midway through the first half. Dominik Szoboszlai’s inswinging corner was headed towards goal by Victor Muñoz, but Bernd Leno managed to clear it off the line.
Shortly before halftime, Antonee Robinson missed one of the Cottagers’ best chances with a header. Despite this, former Liverpool player Álvaro Arbeloa was likely fairly satisfied with his team’s performance in the first half, especially considering they had lost their first three games before today. The hosts started the second half strongly, with Isak testing Leno with a low shot to his left. However, beyond that, Iraola’s team continued to struggle against a resilient Fulham defense.
The visitors posed little threat overall, though they came close when Calvin Bassey powered a header into Alisson’s hands just before Leno was called into action again, this time to save Szoboszlai’s powerful shot. Josh King came close to scoring a late winner when his curling shot was pushed behind for a corner by Alisson, but given the overall flow of the match and the scarcity of clear scoring opportunities, neither team really deserved to win. Liverpool continue to lag behind in the title race, while Fulham showed encouraging signs that may boost confidence in better times to come.
