Sunderland vs Arsenal Review
Arsenal maintained their flawless start to the Premier League season with a hard-earned 2-0 victory at Sunderland, extending their strong head-to-head record to just one loss in the last 30 Premier League encounters (19 wins, 10 draws). Aiming to begin a top-flight campaign with four consecutive wins for only the sixth time in their history, Arsenal started strongly on Wearside. The first clear chance of the match came to Bukayo Saka, whose poorly timed shot from eight yards was easily saved by Robin Roefs, shortly before Daniel Ballard missed a chance at the far post following an excellent cross from Granit Xhaka at the other end.
The Gunners kept pushing for a goal, with Gabriel Magalhães firing a low shot just wide, followed by an instinctive attempt from Kai Havertz that Roefs skillfully tipped over. Despite Arsenal’s dominant possession, Sunderland posed a threat before halftime, as Enzo Le Fée wasted a shot from 25 yards by sending it wide. After failing to win any Premier League matches against teams that finished in the top five last season, the Black Cats increased their efforts at the start of the second half. Their determination paid off in the 54th minute when Ballard was brought down by Ezri Konsa inside the six-yard box. Le Fée took the penalty, but his powerful low shot was brilliantly saved by David Raya.
Inspired by Raya’s outstanding save, the Gunners took the lead a few minutes later when halftime substitute and former Newcastle United player Bruno Guimarães curled an impressive long-range shot into the top corner, marking his first goal for Arsenal. This goal temporarily deflated Sunderland, and Saka missed a great opportunity to extend the visitors’ lead by shooting directly at Roefs from 12 yards. However, Régis Le Bris’ team fought back, with Nordi Mukiele coming close twice with shots from close range.
The home side kept pressing deep into stoppage time but left themselves vulnerable at the back. After Reinildo fouled Saka in the box, receiving a second yellow card, the Arsenal winger successfully converted the penalty, securing three points for Mikel Arteta’s team and putting them three points clear at the top of the Premier League early in the season.
