Manchester City vs Napoli Review
Erling Haaland scored his 50th UEFA Champions League goal in just his 49th match as Manchester City defeated 10-man Napoli 2-0 at home. This result means Napoli remain winless on English soil in 13 attempts across all competitions. Tijjani Reijnders first threatened with a powerful long-range shot. After 17 minutes, a Sam Beukema header from a corner forced an excellent save from Gianluigi Donnarumma. The hosts then launched a counter-attack that shifted the momentum, referee Felix Zwayer initially ruled Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s challenge on Haaland as fair but overturned the decision after a VAR review, resulting in Di Lorenzo’s sending off.

Shortly after Haaland hit a header that grazed the crossbar, Antonio Conte decided to substitute Kevin De Bruyne, ending the Belgian’s return match early. The visitors adopted a more defensive approach that frustrated City, who were restricted to low-driven shots from Phil Foden and Rodri, both saved by Vanja Milinković-Savić.

The Serbian goalkeeper then made two excellent saves in quick succession to block headers from Nico O’Reilly and Joško Gvardiol, before reacting swiftly to prevent an own goal by Matteo Politano during first-half stoppage time. City’s frustrations seemed set to continue in the second half when Foden’s shot skimmed across the goal, but they finally broke through 11 minutes after halftime. Rodri passed to Foden, who lofted a ball over the Napoli defense to Haaland, who headed it over Milinković-Savić, achieving the fastest-ever 50 goals in the Champions League.

Ten minutes later, Pep Guardiola’s team extended their lead when Jérémy Doku skillfully maneuvered past the Napoli defenders and calmly scored his first goal of the season. The Italian champions’ defense limited opportunities in the final stages, but City had already done enough to claim only their second UCL victory in their last eight matches in the tournament, achieving consecutive wins for the first time in the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, Napoli started the UCL group stage by losing their perfect record this season.
