Brazil vs Morocco Review
Five-time FIFA World Cup winners Brazil had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opening match of Group C, extending their unbeaten streak in World Cup openers to 21 games (17 wins, 4 draws). The 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco started strongly against the five-time champions, showing no signs of being underdogs against their renowned opponents. Brazil appeared disorganized in the early moments, but the Atlas Lions were unable to capitalize despite creating numerous opportunities.

The Brazilian defense had to make several crucial blocks, the most notable being when Gabriel Magalhães bravely blocked Neil El Aynaoui after he received a cutback from Noussair Mazraoui near the edge of the penalty area. Around the 15-minute mark, Brazil started to assert themselves as Morocco fell back into their own half, absorbing the pressure from Carlo Ancelotti’s team. This patient strategy paid off for the Atlas Lions in the 21st minute when a swift transition from defense to attack ended with Brahim Díaz setting up Ismael Saibari, who skillfully chipped the ball over the advancing Alisson to put Morocco ahead.

However, their lead was short-lived, as Brazil equalized shortly after the 30-minute mark thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Vinícius Júnior, who cut inside from the left and fired a powerful shot into the far corner. Just before halftime, Lucas Paquetá nearly gave Brazil the lead with an acrobatic attempt inside the box, but Yassine Bounou made the save, ending an exciting first half. Before the second half began, Ancelotti made two substitutions, bringing on Danilo and Fabinho in place of Casemiro and Roger Ibañez, both of whom had received yellow cards in the first half.

These changes appeared to strengthen Brazil, making them more balanced and better at controlling possession. Both teams found it difficult to maintain the first half’s intensity, as several stoppages led to a fragmented second half. Raphinha had a shot saved by Bounou after Vinícius skillfully set him up inside the box. Ultimately, the match fizzled out with very little action near the goal, as both teams appeared content to settle for a draw.

Morocco came closest to securing a victory, but Alisson saved El Aynaoui’s late long-range shot. Mohamed Ouahbi, who was managing the Atlas Lions in a competitive match for the first time since his appointment in March, would have been satisfied with his team’s performance against one of the tournament favorites and will feel confident about taking control of their qualification chances when they face Scotland next. Meanwhile, Ancelotti will likely be frustrated with his team’s performance, as they were outplayed for most of the game and will need to improve against Haiti.
