Freiburg vs Aston Villa Review
Aston Villa ended a 44-year wait for European success by convincingly defeating Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final at Besiktas Park, extending Freiburg’s search for their first major title. Wearing an all-white kit as a tribute to the heroes of their 1982 European Cup victory, Villa took just two minutes to have the first shot on target, with Morgan Rogers’ powerful attempt forcing a strong save from Noah Atubolu, earlier than the German side would have liked in their debut European final.

Shortly after, Nicolas Höfler had Freiburg’s first significant opportunity but his left-footed shot went harmlessly wide of Emiliano Martínez’s goal. As the first half was coming to an end, Villa showed their strength with a powerful display, scoring two goals within seven minutes. It started with a well-rehearsed corner routine practiced in training. Rogers received a short corner while the Villa players in the box blocked their opponents, creating space for Youri Tielemans to connect with a perfectly executed low volley from a floated cross, beating Atubolu.

Although the Belgian’s impressive strike was remarkable, it was soon overshadowed by Emiliano Buendía’s unstoppable goal during first-half stoppage time. Buendía quickly turned at the edge of the box and curled the ball with speed into the far corner, causing scenes of pure celebration at the other end of the stadium. If the German team’s hopes in Europe weren’t already dashed before halftime, they certainly were when Rogers scored Villa’s third goal just before the 60-minute mark, swiftly moving past his defender to tap in Buendía’s low cross.

Rogers’ third goal in the Europa League prompted Julian Schuster to make two substitutions, but it was too late as the Villans nearly scored a fourth through Buendía and then John McGinn. Freiburg was able to limit the damage to three goals, but that meant little to the Villa fans, who celebrated winning a major trophy alongside their top-five Premier League finish, marking Unai Emery’s fifth Europa League victory.
