Barcelona vs Elche Review
Barcelona have closed the gap to just five points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid after a 3-1 victory over Elche, marking their ninth consecutive win against the Franjiverdes. The match began with lively and often hectic play from both teams, featuring frequent changes in possession. However, it took eight minutes before any significant chances emerged, when Elche’s David Affengruber lost the ball to Alejandro Balde, who then set up Lamine Yamal to score with a powerful left-footed shot.

Just four minutes later, Adrià Pedrosa’s mistake allowed Fermín López to surge forward and deliver a perfect pass to Ferran Torres, who made it 2-0, extending Barcelona’s streak of scoring multiple goals in head-to-head matches to 11 games. To their credit, Elche did not simply defend passively against a dominant team seeking their sixth home win in seven games this season. However, this approach only invited Barcelona to press forward, creating numerous chances. Both Marcus Rashford and Fermín came close to scoring, with a last-ditch block from Pedrosa preventing Rashford from extending the lead.

Elche’s goalkeeper on loan from Barcelona, Iñaki Peña, made a full-length save to deny Torres, but unexpectedly, Rafa Mir exploited a weak offside trap and curled a brilliant shot past Wojciech Szczęsny just before halftime, reducing the deficit. Despite this, Barcelona quickly regained control. Peña made an impressive one-handed save from Torres during first-half stoppage time to keep Elche in the game, but the break did not slow Barcelona’s momentum. After halftime, Rashford was the first to attempt to widen the lead, missing a golden opportunity early in the second half and later having a goal disallowed due to Fermín being offside earlier in the play.

Trying to capitalize on Barcelona’s missed chances, Mir nearly scored Elche’s second goal, narrowly hitting the crossbar with a shot similar to his previous one. Eventually, Rashford earned his goal, powerfully striking the ball in from a tight angle off the post. The outcome means Elche have now gone four league games without a victory (1 draw, 3 losses), while Barcelona have extended their unbeaten streak against the Costa Blanca team to 22 matches (18 wins, 4 draws).
