Chelsea vs Manchester City Review
An impressive second-half display propelled Manchester City to an important 3-0 win over Chelsea during a crucial weekend in the Premier League title race, also extending the Cityzens’ unbeaten streak against Chelsea to 13 matches. Although the visitors started by putting pressure on, Chelsea soon gained control and posed the greater threat. A quick move by the Blues ended with Cole Palmer firing his shot into the side netting, while João Pedro had a shot deflected wide by Abdukodir Khusanov before setting up Marc Cucurella for a goal that was disallowed due to offside.

Robert Sánchez didn’t have to make a save until the 34th minute, but when called upon, he performed excellently by stopping Bernardo Silva’s shot following a cutback from Nico O’Reilly. O’Reilly was again the creator when Rayan Cherki received the ball in space near the edge of the box, though Cherki’s shot was weak and directed towards Sánchez. Antoine Semenyo made a quick move inside before narrowly missing the target with his shot, while Andrey Santos headed off target at the other end with the final touch of the first half.

After the break, the Cityzens started strongly. Erling Haaland had a shot blocked by Jorrel Hato, and within six minutes of the restart, they took the lead as O’Reilly shrugged off Santos to head in Cherki’s cross. Just six minutes later, Cherki increased his Premier League assist count for the season to 10 by skillfully maneuvering near Chelsea’s box and delivering a precise pass to Marc Guéhi, who finished with an accurate shot.

After initiating the celebrations, O’Reilly was forced off due to injury, but the team continued their momentum, and four minutes after his exit, Jérémy Doku combined with Cherki to dispossess Moisés Caicedo and score, prompting chants of “Are you watching Arsenal?” Khusanov nearly scored with what could have been an impressive shot, but he missed the target. Meanwhile, the home team showed no signs of a comeback, as Donnarumma saved Cucurella’s header.

The victory ended City’s streak of consecutive Premier League draws and allowed them to take full advantage of Arsenal’s loss to Bournemouth. City now sit six points behind Arsenal, with a game in hand and an upcoming match against the league leaders next week. Additionally, the result marked Chelsea’s third straight league defeat for the first time since May 2023, leaving them four points behind fifth-placed Liverpool.
