Manchester United vs Brentford Review
Manchester United are close to securing their spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League after an exciting 2-1 victory over Brentford, marking the Bees’ fifth consecutive Premier League loss at Old Trafford. Within the first two minutes, there was almost a late candidate for goal of the season when Kobbie Mainoo skillfully navigated through numerous Brentford defenders before setting up Amad Diallo, who appeared to have an easy finish. However, the Ivorian international was thwarted by a clever block on the line from Sepp van den Berg.

Shortly after, Caoimhin Kelleher made a crucial save, with goal-line technology confirming he had just managed to clear Harry Maguire’s header in time. Keith Andrews’ team had a troubling beginning, as Casemiro broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Maguire acted as the provider this time, heading a Bruno Fernandes cross back across the box to the Brazilian, who scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season, further enhancing his best-ever goal-scoring record. Another in-form striker, Igor Thiago, had an opportunity to respond quickly but missed his shot at the far post while under pressure from Luke Shaw.

Thiago had two more significant chances before halftime, and Senne Lammens had to be alert to stop an own goal by Ayden Heaven. In an open game, only the offside flag prevented Amad from scoring at the other end, before Benjamin Šeško finally secured the hosts’ second goal just before halftime, assisted once again by Fernandes, shooting the ball past Kelleher after outmaneuvering a defender. In the second half, Fernandes kept orchestrating the play, aware that one more assist would equal the single-season Premier League record set by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

However, it was the London team applying the most pressure, with Thiago missing yet another opportunity and relying on the offside call to avoid embarrassment. Dango Ouattara then struck the post from close range, and Maguire courageously blocked his acrobatic follow-up attempt. The match seemed to be settling down, but Mathias Jensen made it competitive again by firing a brilliant shot into the corner from the edge of the box in the 87th minute, marking his fifth career goal against the Red Devils.

That created a tense ending for the home team, but they managed to secure an important victory. United have now scored in 22 consecutive Premier League matches and have the exciting opportunity to potentially clinch Champions League qualification with a win against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend. Brentford’s winless streak dates back to February, yet they are still only two points behind sixth place, keeping their hopes of qualifying for Europe for the first time alive.
