Brentford vs Liverpool Review
Liverpool’s attempt to defend their Premier League title is continuing to struggle, as their 3-2 loss to Brentford marks their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat for the first time since March 2021. The visitors fell behind within the first five minutes in a straightforward manner, Michael Kayode’s long throw into the box was flicked on by Kristoffer Ajer and volleyed in by Dango Ouattara. Mohamed Salah nearly responded immediately for Liverpool, but Caoimhín Kelleher denied him, and Florian Wirtz missed an opportunity to score his first goal for the Reds by slicing a half-volley wide.

Brentford were eager to extend their one-goal lead and kept pushing to create more space. Shortly after the hour mark, Jordan Henderson fired a shot wide of the goal. As Brentford pressed forward, Giorgi Mamardashvili made an impressive one-handed save to stop Mikkel Damsgaard. After being denied, Damsgaard became the assister, delivering a defense-splitting pass that sent Kevin Schade sprinting towards goal, and Schade confidently scored to double their lead. However, Keith Andrews’ team couldn’t maintain their 2-0 advantage going into halftime.

In a controversial moment during the fifth minute of stoppage time, despite only three minutes being indicated, Milos Kerkez appeared at the far post to finish off Conor Bradley’s cross. After the break, Brentford continued to dominate, and following another remarkable save by Mamardashvili to deny Damsgaard. Brentford were awarded a penalty after VAR ruled that Virgil van Dijk fouled Ouattara right on the edge of the penalty area. Igor Thiago took the penalty and calmly scored from 12 yards, restoring Brentford’s two-goal lead with his fourth goal in as many games.

After conceding a third goal, Arne Slot immediately turned to his substitutes, making four changes within 10 minutes in a desperate attempt to get back into the match. One of his key players, Salah, provided a late lifeline by smashing the ball off the underside of the crossbar, ending a six-game goal drought at club level. However, his goal came too late to stop Liverpool from suffering their fifth consecutive defeat in London for the first time since 1970. It was a memorable night for Brentford, who moved into the top half of the table with their third win in four Premier League games.
