Newcastle vs Arsenal Review
Arsenal came from behind to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle in the Premier League, earning crucial three points and avoiding defeat at St James’ Park for the first time in four visits. Nick Pope demonstrated his quality early on by making an excellent save to deny Eberechi Eze just five minutes into the match. The game was becoming a back-and-forth contest, with Raya making a routine save from Malick Thiaw’s header. Later, Pope managed to get enough contact on the ball to prevent conceding a penalty after his challenge on Viktor Gyökeres, who had intercepted a careless pass from Jacob Murphy.

Shortly afterward, Arsenal experienced another moment of frustration due to fine margins when a quick attack ended with Leandro Trossard’s shot beating Pope but striking the post. Eze continued to look for chances from the edge of Newcastle’s penalty area, but one of his attempts was blocked by Sven Botman, and another was saved impressively by Pope. After withstanding that pressure, Newcastle took the lead in the 35th minute when Sandro Tonali executed a short corner and delivered a cross that Nick Woltemade headed in, rising above the falling Gabriel Magalhães.

Having conceded the corner unnecessarily, Cristhian Mosquera was substituted by William Saliba at halftime. The Gunners pressed on in search of an equalizer, with Eze shooting harmlessly over the goal. A beautiful sequence of play ended with Martín Zubimendi’s delicate chip being headed by Jurriën Timber, who was denied by an equally impressive save from Pope. Declan Rice made a sprinting run back to block Murphy’s shot, and although Newcastle remained solid defensively, Eddie Howe suffered a setback when Tino Livramento was forced off injured with about fifteen minutes remaining.

The Magpies were unable to maintain their lead, as Mikel Merino headed Rice’s cross in off the post to equalize for Arsenal. The situation improved further for the Gunners in the 97th minute, when Gabriel sparked jubilant celebrations among the away fans by heading in Martin Ødegaard’s corner, bringing his team to just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. In doing so, they also handed Newcastle their second league loss of the season.
