Manchester City got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a hard-earned 3-1 home victory over AFC Bournemouth, extending their impressive record in 17 Premier League head-to-head matches (16 wins, 1 loss). After their disappointing defeat at Aston Villa last week, Pep Guardiola likely demanded a strong response against Bournemouth. The Cherries appeared to shock the hosts just 45 seconds into the game when Eli Junior Kroupi scored unmarked in the box, but the goal was quickly ruled out for offside. City took that as a warning and soon found their rhythm, with Erling Haaland capitalizing on Rayan Cherki’s flick to break through and score past Djordje Petrovic.

Andoni Iraola’s team was not ready to give up and equalized in under 10 minutes after Tyler Adams took advantage of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s mistake while trying to deal with Alex Scott’s corner kick, allowing the American player to strike the loose ball into the net. After leveling the score, Bournemouth were punished again by Haaland, as they let him break through, bypass Petrovic, and slide the ball in for his 13th league goal of the season.

Bournemouth started the second half strongly and nearly equalized once more, but Donnarumma made a good save to deny Kroupi after a slick combination between David Brooks and Scott. However, City raised their intensity again, and after a smooth period of possession, Phil Foden passed the ball to Nico O’Reilly, who controlled it, composed himself, moved into the box, and fired into the far corner, effectively putting the game out of Bournemouth’s reach.

The third goal deflated the Cherries, who found it difficult to create opportunities against a determined City defense. After numerous substitutions from both teams, the game became fragmented, but Pep’s side managed the closing stages comfortably, securing a victory that moved them up to second place, one point ahead of the Cherries, who fell to fourth.
