Unai Emery does not want the club to sell Juan Foyth

Unai Emery, the manager of Villarreal, has pleaded with the team’s board to prevent right-back Juan Foyth from leaving the club this summer.

Juan Foyth has managed 71 appearances in all competitions since joining from Tottenham, originally on loan, in 2020. Foyth is on Barcelona’s shortlist for the right-back position, and rumours in Spain have suggested that personal terms have already been agreed with the player.

Injury has already prevented him from traveling to Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but some fans have speculated that this may just be a ruse to hide the transfer rumors. Emery was having none of it.

“This issue is not impacting us, but I think [selling Foyth] makes no sense since the market closes on 31 August,” Emery said. “Those who make the decisions would have to see something that the rest of us don’t see.

“Foyth will not play [against Atletico] because he has discomfort.

“In the face of rumours, we test how the players are inside. Foyth is very happy here, very grateful to the club and to what he is experiencing with us. He gives me a lot of peace of mind. The conversation we had was just about the game.”

Xavi has openly acknowledged his desire to add a new right-back this summer. Cesar Azpilicueta, who was supposed to be his top target, came close to joining before agreeing to a new deal with Chelsea, forcing the team to search elsewhere.

Foyth’s contract contains a €42 million release clause, and has a contract with Villarreal until 2026.
