Barcelona vs Girona Review
Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Girona in La Liga marked only their third win in six competitive home matches against Los Blanquivermells, allowing them to overtake Real Madrid at the top of the standings. As anticipated, Barcelona pressed hard from the start, with Marcus Rashford testing Paulo Gazzaniga’s reflexes early on with a free-kick, while Lamine Yamal caused significant trouble on the opposite flank.

Girona responded with a formation to counter Barcelona’s early pressure, which clearly unsettled Barça, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the hosts from taking the lead. Excellent play by Pedri created space, and his reverse shot deflected off the post, marking the club’s 47th consecutive game with a goal, a new record. It took nearly 20 minutes before Girona mounted a sustained offensive threat, and when the hosts failed to clear a corner, the oldest player on the field, Axel Witsel, leveled the score with a stunning overhead kick.

In Girona’s next offensive move, only a strong save by Wojciech Szczęsny prevented the Blaugranes from falling behind, before Portu struck the post after easily breaking through Barça’s high defensive line. Gazzaniga then stretched fully to deflect Frenkie de Jong’s shot around the post as the play swung back and forth, with the crowd noise rising significantly. Another fierce free-kick from Rashford was denied only by the goalpost, and although the home team was gaining the upper hand as halftime neared, Girona still posed a threat, with Bryan Gil and Witsel missing clear scoring opportunities.

Shortly after the break, substitute Fermín López launched a long-range shot as Barça tried to pick up the pace, but just like in the first half, Girona quickly regained the initiative, with Gil coming close again. Approaching the 60-minute mark, both sides continued to attack aggressively, and Barcelona believed they had taken the lead through Pau Cubarsí, but the play was called back for an earlier foul. Rashford then surprisingly missed a close-range shot from three yards out and soon forced two more saves from Gazzaniga as the hosts aimed to create some separation from their visitors.

As the match reached its closing moments, Girona opted to focus on counterattacks, while the home team launched continuous attacks. The visitors earned significant praise for withstanding this pressure, and the crowd’s reactions spoke volumes. Hansi Flick’s red card during stoppage time for dissent only fueled the fans’ frustration, but the atmosphere shifted quickly when Ronald Araújo scored a winning goal in the 93rd minute.
