Barcelona vs Espanyol Review
After Real Madrid was held to a draw by Girona on Friday, Barcelona capitalized on the unexpected opportunity by securing a 4-1 La Liga win against their Catalan rivals Espanyol, extending their lead at the top of the table to nine points. Espanyol aimed for their first victory at Camp Nou since 2009, but they barely controlled the ball during the first 10 minutes as Barça dominated the pace in the Catalan derby. The visitors’ chances were further diminished when Ferran Torres scored his first La Liga goal since January 31, heading in a corner from Lamine Yamal at the far post.

The home team maintained such strong possession, reaching as high as 85% at one point, that a rare moment of inattention was inevitable. Fortunately for Barça, that didn’t result in an equalizer. In fact, after 25 minutes, Lamine delivered a beautiful outside-of-the-foot pass to Torres in the center, and the striker’s skillful touch allowed the ball to roll into the net past the charging Marko Dmitrović. The Serbian goalkeeper then made an impressive double save from Eric García and Fermín López, keeping the scoreline respectable until Alejandro José Hernández blew the whistle for halftime.

The referee was a bit too quick to blow the whistle at the start of the second half, which disrupted the flow of the game. Espanyol continued to show no threat offensively, with Cyril Ngonge being easily dispossessed, reflecting their overall poor performance. Barça appeared to have taken a three-goal lead before Ferran’s hat-trick goal was disallowed due to García being offside. Just a minute later, Pol Lozano found himself completely unmarked outside the box and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that left Joan García with no chance. This goal gave the visitors a much-needed boost.

Shortly after, Marcus Rashford surprisingly missed an easy opportunity to increase Barça’s lead. Espanyol then dominated for long stretches, putting the home team under pressure, before Lamine outpaced Dmitrović to a through ball and calmly scored into an empty net. By this stage, Espanyol seemed eager to finish the game quickly, but Rashford still managed to add a goal to improve the final score.

As a result, Espanyol have now gone 14 La Liga matches without a win (5 draws, 9 losses), while Barça have extended their head-to-head advantage over their local rivals to 30 games (23 wins, 7 draws).
