Arsenal vs Manchester United Review
Manchester United secured an impressive win against the Premier League title contender by coming from behind to defeat Arsenal 3-2, handing the Gunners their first home loss of the season. Arsenal started aggressively as expected, but apart from an off-target shot from Trossard, they failed to make the most of their dominance. However, it wasn’t long before Mikel Arteta’s side created a clear opportunity when the small but agile Martín Zubimendi rose highest in the box to meet Rice’s cross, only for Senne Lammens to make an excellent save, pushing the header out for a corner.
It seemed only a matter of time before Arsenal finally broke through, and the opening goal came under fortunate circumstances. A ball into the box was only partially cleared by Patrick Dorgu, and when the ball fell kindly to Martin Ødegaard, his shot was accidentally deflected into his own net by Lisandro Martínez. Despite the home team’s dominance, a major mistake gave United a chance to get back into the match. Zubimendi’s careless pass allowed Bryan Mbeumo to break free and, after rounding David Raya, he calmly scored into an empty net to equalize.
Arsenal appeared stunned after conceding, United knocked them down again six minutes into the second half. Dorgu, who has recently been playing as a left wide midfielder, justified the decision by powerfully firing United’s second goal from distance off the underside of the crossbar following some clever interplay with Bruno Fernandes, leaving Raya with no chance and silencing the Emirates crowd. This led Arteta to make four substitutions, but the changes failed to spark a comeback as Arsenal struggled to gain control of the game.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick might have been surprised by how comfortably his team was managing the game, which could explain why they were caught off guard six minutes before the end. Bukayo Saka’s inswinging corner created chaos, allowing Mikel Merino to tap the ball in from close range, setting up an exciting finish. However, there was one more dramatic moment in this remarkable match, as United quickly responded when Matheus Cunha curled a brilliant shot from outside the penalty area to secure the Red Devils’ first league victory at the Emirates since 2017, ending Arsenal’s 17-game unbeaten home streak.
