PSG vs Bayern Munich Review
Paris Saint-Germain, the defending UEFA Champions League (UCL) champions, defeated Bayern Munich 5-4 in an outstanding first leg of the semi-final, setting a new record for the highest-scoring match in the competition’s semi-final history. This exciting encounter featured the defending champions facing off against the tournament favorites, with the atmosphere at Parc des Princes electrified by massive tifos and an impressive fire display before the game. Bayern took the lead in the 17th minute when Willian Pacho fouled Luis Díaz inside the penalty area, allowing Harry Kane to score from the spot, sending goalkeeper Matvéi Safónov the wrong way.

This goal marked Kane’s 54th of the season across all competitions and made him the first English player to score in six consecutive UCL matches. Shortly after, Safónov made a crucial save from Michael Olise, who was set up one-on-one by Kane, while at the other end, Ousmane Dembélé missed a clear chance by shooting wide. Dembélé’s embarrassment was quickly avoided when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia darted into the penalty area, cut inside, and scored in the far corner. The skill on display was astonishing, with Olise hitting the post after charging in from the right, and Désiré Doué having a shot deflected wide after a skillful run.

Dembélé delivered the resulting corner, and João Neves, who had scored in their previous league meeting, perfectly timed his run to head the ball past Manuel Neuer. Four minutes before halftime, Olise equalized by weaving into the box and firing in his 20th goal of the season across all competitions. The excitement continued in stoppage time when Alphonso Davies was judged to have handled the ball after a VAR review, allowing Dembélé to convert the penalty past Neuer for his 17th goal of the season.

The goal-scoring spree continued after halftime when Kvaratskhelia curled in Achraf Hakimi’s cross to reach double digits in the Champions League this season. Just two minutes later, Dembélé scored a fifth goal by leaving Neuer frozen with a low shot that brushed the inside of the near post. The record-breaking eighth goal came 20 minutes into the second half when Dayot Upamecano gently nodded in Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick, marking only his second goal of the season.

Shortly after, Díaz delivered an impressive touch and finish from Kane’s pass to narrow the gap to one goal. This was the Colombian’s third goal against PSG this season, having scored twice in the league stage, and marked the 100th goal scored by Bayern’s attacking trio of Díaz, Kane, and Olise in the 2025/26 season.

PSG was denied a sixth goal when Senny Mayulu’s late shot struck the crossbar, but they secured their 100th win in the Champions League proper, and their coach Luis Enrique achieved his 50th win, becoming the fastest coach ever to reach this milestone in just 77 games. This victory ended PSG’s streak of five consecutive head-to-head losses, stopped Bayern’s nine-match winning run across all competitions, and sets the stage for the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
