Manchester City vs Burnley Review
Manchester City extended their dominance over Burnley by winning 5-1 in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium, marking their 14th consecutive victory against the Clarets across all competitions. Burnley made it somewhat tough for City during the early moments. However, considering Burnley’s poor recent record at this venue, those difficulties for City were unlikely to persist. Despite a slow start, City found the net within 15 minutes, aided by some unusually poor defending that allowed Jérémy Doku to take a shot, which Maxime Estève then deflected into his own goal.

Although Scott Parker’s team was clearly shaken by that goal, they managed to withstand City’s pressure and remained just one goal behind by the 30-minute mark. Burnley owed that to Martin Dúbravka, who made an incredible save to stop Doku from finishing a swift City counterattack. Trailing by just 1-0, Burnley remained competitive, and their courageous play was rewarded about 10 minutes before halftime. After winning the ball high up the pitch from City, Quilindschy Hartman delivered a cross that Jaidon Anthony expertly finished into the far corner, marking his fourth goal of the season.

Haaland missed an opportunity to restore the hosts’ lead before the break, leaving Pep with much to consider at halftime as his team continued to disappoint. Burnley kept creating chances in the second half, with Hartman testing Gianluigi Donnarumma with a powerful shot that required a sharp save. However, Parker’s side paid dearly for these missed chances shortly after the 60-minute mark when City regained the lead. The goal wasn’t typical of Guardiola’s style, but the manager didn’t mind as Matheus Nunes was quickest to volley a loose ball inside the box and score.

That goal appeared to energize the Cityzens, who quickly increased their lead when Estève accidentally scored an own goal for the second time that afternoon, deflecting a Nunes cross past a struggling Dúbravka. At that moment, Burnley’s chances were effectively over, and although they continued to put in a strong performance, they couldn’t capitalize on their efforts. The win was a much-needed boost for Guardiola, as his team has now triumphed in 23 of their last 25 Premier League matches against newly promoted teams, with Haaland sealing the victory in the final minutes by scoring twice.
