Monaco vs Barcelona Review
Monaco kicked off their UEFA Champions League group stage with a 2-1 win against a 10-man Barcelona, marking their eighth victory in the last ten home matches against Spanish teams. This was an ideal start for Monaco in their first UCL group stage game since the 2018/19 season. Just over ten minutes into the match, a poor pass from Marc-André ter Stegen put Eric García in a difficult position, and after being dispossessed by Takumi Minamino, García had no choice but to foul him as the last defender, resulting in a red card.
Monaco quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Maghnes Akliouche scoring shortly after with a powerful shot at the near post. Despite being a player down, the talented 17-year-old Lamine Yamal took control of the match, cutting in from the right to score a quick equalizer. Wilfried Singo almost put Monaco back in the lead before halftime with a goal from inside the box, but an offside call ruled it out. Despite their efforts, Monaco went into halftime tied.
The second half followed a similar trend, with Monaco doing most of the work, but as Vanderson discovered when Ter Stegen made a full-stretch save, regaining the lead was challenging. Eventually, the pressure became too much for Barcelona with just under 20 minutes left, as a defensive blunder allowed substitute George Ilenikhena to break through and score, putting Monaco ahead again on his Champions League debut.
Folarin Balogun nearly secured the victory shortly after entering the game, but his powerful shot at the near post was saved by Ter Stegen’s extended arm. The Spanish team received a break five minutes before the end when Iñigo Martínez brought down Balogun in the penalty area, but after reviewing the situation on the pitch side monitor, the referee changed his original call. Nevertheless, this did not impact the outcome, as Monaco managed to maintain their strong unbeaten streak to start the season.
