Sergi Roberto to stay at Camp Nou till next season

Barcelona and Sergi Roberto have finalized the last aspects of Sergi Roberto’s new contract, which was previously agreed upon a few days ago. It was only a matter of drafting paperwork and putting out the last details before the deal was finalized on Wednesday.

All that’s left now is for the signing to take place and for the formal announcement to be made, which should happen soon. The player will stay with the team for another season, until June 2023, after his expires this summer.

The talks between the two groups have been difficult. Last December, it appeared like an agreement to extend his contract for another two years was close to being reached.

Joan Laporta openly took it for granted since the club was so certain of it. However, the deal fell apart, and discussions stalled for months until being restarted just a few weeks ago.

The club’s attitude has already shifted, and the offer was no longer the same. He was only given one more year and a significant pay cut, so he will be paid less than half of what he had been earning up to this point.

Despite the attention of other teams such as Atletico Madrid, the player has opted to accept it since his objective has always been to stay at Barcelona.

Xavi’s loyalty to his former teammate has been one of the keys to this extension, albeit it is unclear what role he will play next season.

Sergi Roberto will not be a first-choice right-back or midfielder, and will have to earn his spot. One of the grounds for his wage cut is because of this.
