Alexis Mac Allister scored against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season, as Arne Slot’s Liverpool secured a thrilling 1-0 victory in the group stage at Anfield. There were many storylines leading up to this exciting match between two European giants, none more notable than Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to Merseyside. He started the game on the bench and watched as Mac Allister fired an early shot over the crossbar. Thibaut Courtois was soon called into action, making an excellent save to deny Dominik Szoboszlai.

Many Liverpool supporters had anticipated a penalty to be awarded, but to their surprise, the decision was reversed. Undeterred, Szoboszlai took a powerful right-footed shot, which Courtois managed to deflect safely. The match was building up nicely as it approached halftime, with additional chances for Jude Bellingham and Mac Allister during an engaging first half.
In the early stages of the second half, Courtois was single-handedly keeping the score level amid a flurry of opportunities for Slot’s team. He made two excellent saves to deny headers from Virgil van Dijk and Hugo Ekitike, and the French player came close again shortly after. It was clear that beating Real Madrid’s goalkeeper would require something exceptional, and Slot’s team finally broke through when Mac Allister powered an unstoppable header from Szoboszlai’s free-kick, giving Liverpool a well-earned lead. Alexander-Arnold was brought on in the 81st minute, receiving a mostly negative reaction as he replaced Arda Güler.
In the end, Liverpool had done enough to achieve what might be a significant win for their season. Remarkably, this marked the first occasion Slot’s team had won consecutive matches since a streak of seven straight victories was halted by a loss to Crystal Palace in late September. On the other hand, Real Madrid has little reason to be dissatisfied with the outcome, having won only two of their last ten head-to-head matches against English teams (with three draws and five losses).
