Bayern Munich vs Dortmund Review
Bayern Munich emerged as 2-1 winners in the 113th Bundesliga Klassiker, overcoming Borussia Dortmund to equal Die Schwarzgelben’s German record of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions at the start of a season. From the very beginning, Die Roten appeared to be a potentially unbeatable team, with Joshua Kimmich testing Gregor Kobel from long range, followed by the Dortmund goalkeeper making two saves from shots by Michael Olise and Luis Díaz. However, this was just a prelude to Bayern’s opening goal, which came in the 22nd minute when Harry Kane jumped highest to connect with Kimmich’s corner at the near post and flick the ball past the helpless Kobel.
Kane’s impressive 12th league goal of the season had the intended impact, and Bayern faced little trouble from their opponents for the rest of the first half. However, after the break, Dortmund came out energized and nearly scored when Felix Nmecha’s header narrowly missed the target. Shortly after, Dortmund’s best opportunity arose when Karim Adeyemi found space inside the box but slipped while shooting, sending the ball wide.
The visitors were understandably frustrated at not capitalizing on their momentum, which may have led to them falling two goals behind in a disappointing manner with just 10 minutes left. Jobe Bellingham initially did well to intercept Díaz’s cross but hesitated too long in the six-yard box, allowing Olise to slide in and tap the ball into the net. Niko Kovač reacted by making substitutions, moves he likely wished he had made earlier, as Julian Brandt quickly reduced the deficit by redirecting Julian Ryerson’s cross.
That led to a hectic finish, but the visiting team couldn’t find a last-minute equalizer. This outcome means Dortmund have fallen seven points behind Bayern. Clearly determined to hold onto their title for as long as possible, Bayern continue to have the longest unbeaten streak among Europe’s top five leagues and also ended a three-game winless streak against Die Schwarzgelben.
