Brentford vs Chelsea Review
Brentford maintained their best-ever start to a Premier League season by defeating Chelsea 3-0, remaining unbeaten after five matches and extending an impressive record of six wins and one draw in seven all-time Premier League Friday night games. With the last four head-to-head encounters at this stadium all ending in draws, and Brentford having shared points in an impressive 10 of their previous 14 Premier League matches, a draw seemed likely, and the first half reflected that expectation.
Chelsea began well, with Pedro Neto curling a shot on target that Caoimhín Kelleher saved effectively, but after that, the action slowed as Brentford focused on strengthening one of the league’s most vulnerable defenses. Like Chelsea, Brentford had scored first in each of their Premier League matches this season. They soon began to find some space, as seen when Yehor Yarmolyuk fired a shot from outside the box that was comfortably saved by Emiliano Martínez. Morgan Rogers and Keane Lewis-Potter had half-chances that ended the first half on a positive note, but both managers recognized that more attacking effort was needed after the break.
After the restart, Brentford players appeared to respond to that message, with Mikkel Damsgaard orchestrating play and Jaidon Anthony heading a shot straight at Martínez. However, the summer signing from Burnley didn’t repeat that error; when Damsgaard delivered a corner, Jannik Schuster headed it across the goal, allowing Anthony to score with a close-range header. This goal around the 60-minute mark encouraged the visitors to push forward and try to open up the game, but they were met by a resilient Brentford defense that cleared chance after chance.
In the last 10 minutes, Chelsea were so eager to find an equalizer that they left themselves vulnerable to a quick counterattack by Kevin Schade. Although Martínez saved Schade’s initial shot, Igor Thiago was there to score the rebound, marking his first goal of the season. To add to the home fans’ delight, in the final moments, Schade crossed to the far post where Fábio Carvalho scored a close-range goal. After several frustrating weeks, Brentford’s first-ever home Premier League victory over Chelsea was exactly what they needed.
Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso will be questioning the lack of goals from his team, who had previously averaged three goals per game in the 2026/27 season, especially since this was their first time failing to score in Premier League play since April.
