Liverpool vs Tottenham Review
Liverpool missed the opportunity to move into the Premier League top four after Tottenham Hotspur secured a late 1-1 draw, preventing the Reds from achieving their 13th win in 17 league encounters. Liverpool aimed to narrow the gap to the top four following losses by Chelsea and Aston Villa over the weekend, and they started strongly, taking the lead with a brilliant free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai in the 18th minute. After dominating possession, the home team earned a set-piece chance from 25 yards when Alexis Mac Allister was fouled by Souza. Szoboszlai expertly converted the free-kick, sending a powerful, curling shot into the top-left corner, despite goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario getting a hand to the ball.
After scoring the opening goal, Liverpool nearly doubled their advantage right away when Ryan Gravenberch charged into Spurs’ penalty area but shot over the crossbar. A few minutes later, Cody Gakpo, who was relied upon to lead Liverpool’s attack, had a low shot that Vicario pushed onto the post. Tottenham struggled for much of the first half but ended the period strongly, with Richarlison narrowly missing a header and then being denied by Alisson Becker with another powerful header from a corner.
Igor Tudor would have been encouraged by his team’s fighting spirit in the first half but likely cautious given that Liverpool’s matches have seen a league-high 59 goals scored in the second half this season. Rio Ngumoha nearly scored a second goal after being set up by Jeremie Frimpong, but his curling shot went just wide after cutting inside. Around the 60-minute mark, Spurs had another chance when Richarlison outmuscled Virgil van Dijk, only for his shot to be saved by his fellow Brazilian, Alisson.
After the 60-minute mark, Arne Slot made three substitutions, bringing on Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike among others. Shortly after, the two substitutes nearly combined for Liverpool’s second goal when Salah set up Ekitike, but the French striker missed the ball at full stretch. Salah continued to trouble Tottenham’s defense with his relentless runs, though the final pass was often lacking. As the match neared its end, Liverpool’s poor finishing kept Tottenham in the game, and in the 90th minute, Tottenham’s only real threat, Richarlison, capitalized.
Assisted by Randal Kolo Muani, Richarlison controlled the ball inside the box and scored, sending the away fans into celebration. Ultimately, Liverpool paid the price for their inefficient finishing and remain in fifth place, two points behind Aston Villa. Tottenham, meanwhile, move one point clear of the relegation zone but are still without a Premier League win in 2026, desperately needing this point as a foundation to climb the table.
