Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona Review
Barcelona maintained their four point lead at the top of La Liga with a 1-0 victory, marking only their third win in the last eight matches at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao (2 draws, 3 losses). Just 20 seconds into the game, Barcelona’s João Cancelo struck the crossbar. By the 10th minute, Athletic’s Unai Gómez suffered a serious knee injury and was substituted by Robert Navarro, disrupting the home team’s rhythm and allowing Barça to take control. However, the tempo of the match slowed considerably by the halfway point of the first half, with Athletic mostly struggling to keep up.

Marc Bernal took control of the game from midfield for the visiting team, although any scoring opportunities for Barça’s forwards were quickly stopped by Dani Vivian and Aymeric Laporte. On the other side, Selton Sánchez had a chance to put the home team ahead when he was clear on goal, but Joan García managed to take the ball away just as he was about to shoot. Soon after, Iñaki Williams appeared to have scored first, but the goal was ruled offside, and Navarro’s cross-shot went wide.

After the break, Barça once again pushed forward, with Unai Simón saving a shot on target from Marcus Rashford before Rashford assisted Pau Cubarsí, whose header narrowly missed. Shortly after, Cubarsí was fortunate to avoid a red card after fouling Williams when the Ghanaian was through on goal, and a brilliant save by Joan García from Oihan Sancet kept the score tied. Ultimately, it was a moment of brilliance that decided the match, as Lamine Yamal, who had been quiet throughout the game, curled a stunning shot into the top corner to secure the win.

Credit to Athletic for pushing the visitors hard in the final moments, but they encountered an unbeatable Joan García. Consequently, the Blaugrana secured a win, extending their unbeaten streak to six head-to-head matches and maintaining clean sheets in the last five. Meanwhile, the loss leaves the Basques still five points shy of the European qualification places.
