Liverpool’s shocking slump continued with a disastrous 4-1 home loss to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League, marking their third consecutive game conceding three or more goals. Liverpool manager Arne Slot is facing growing criticism, and Virgil van Dijk’s reckless handball early on during a PSV corner inside the penalty area only added to the pressure. Ivan Perišić stepped up to take the penalty and calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner, giving the Dutch team an unexpected lead.

Liverpool quickly equalized, as Cody Gakpo’s initial shot was saved by Matěj Kovář, but the rebound fell to Dominik Szoboszlai, who easily scored from 12 yards into an open net. PSV believed they had regained the lead shortly after when Yarek Gasiorowski scored by firing in a rebound from close range, but his goal was quickly ruled out due to an offside in the buildup. Liverpool dominated much of the first half and came very close to taking the lead for the first time when Van Dijk’s header hit the underside of the crossbar.

Despite feeling they should have been ahead, Liverpool found themselves trailing just over 10 minutes into the second half. PSV’s second goal was beautifully set up by Mauro Júnior, who delivered a perfectly timed pass to Guus Til, who confidently scored past Giorgi Mamardashvili. Liverpool’s situation was further complicated by an injury to Ekitike. Things worsened for Liverpool about 15 minutes before the end when a mistake by Ibrahima Konaté was seized upon by Ricardo Pepi, after Pepi’s initial shot hit the post, Couhaib Driouech was there to tap the ball into an empty net.

In the final moments, Slot took a risk by substituting Konaté for Chiesa, but it was probably too little, too late since the team had already fallen too far behind. The pressure on Slot has increased significantly, and his role is now under even more intense examination. This match will be remembered as one of the most iconic nights in PSV’s European history, especially as they sealed the victory in stoppage time when Driouech scored a fourth goal, causing a large crowd to head towards the exits at Anfield.
