The 4-0 thumping of Milan by Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio team on Tuesday handed the Serie A leaders another boost in their championship challenge, and the Italian manager was happy to be able to aid out his old club Napoli.
Sarri, who was born in Naples, oversaw the Partenopei between 2015 and 2018, who now appear poised to overcome a 33-year Scudetto drought under Luciano Spalletti.
Prior to Milan’s match against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, Napoli’s lead at the top was 12 points, and it remained that way when the hosts put up a dominant performance.
At the half, Sarri’s team was in command thanks to goals from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Mattia Zaccagni. In the second half, Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson added more goals, but Milan’s attempt to cut the distance to the top of Serie A to nine points fell woefully short.
Sarri stated he enjoyed helping his previous club, even if he was eager to concentrate on his team’s performance, telling DAZN: “We mainly gave ourselves a gift. We cared a lot for the standings and to show how much we have grown.
“If Napoli are well placed in the standings, for me it’s nothing but a reason for satisfaction.”
